Jonathan Little is a highly successful poker professional who has won over $4 million in tournament play. His first book, Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker, Volume 1 dealt with the fundamentals of play. In this second book he builds on this base by examining the highly complex issue of how to handle the different stages of a tournament.

Jonathan Little sits down with Kristy Arnett at PokerNews.com to discuss the book.

As well as outlining a technically accurate style of play, Jonathan also discusses a number of other topics that are crucial to success at poker. These include:

  • How to spot tells (and avoid giving them)
  • Correct etiquette
  • Practical tips for tournament play

Managing life as a professional poker player throws up a number of issues in itself and Jonathan calls upon his many years as a pro to address these. They include:

  • Developing your poker skills
  • Mental & physical approaches required for successful play.

As well as being one of the world’s best players, Jonathan has been a highly respected coach for many years. In the final section of the book he draws on his experience here to answer the most common FAQ’s asked by students and also offers an in-depth analysis of 30 hands from tournament play which outline many of the concepts discussed in the book.

In his professional career he has won the WPT twice. In 2010 he cashed 5 times in the WSOP, including a third place finish.

Overall
I think the second volume provides a plethora of pertinent and interesting information that would appeal to both new and existing readers of Little.
Overall
The second and final installment of two-time World Poker Tour Champion Jonathan Little's tournament poker strategy books is now available, and the poker world has been wondering if Volume 2 will be able to live-up to the expectations and reach or surpass the very high-bar set by Volume 1 of Secrets of Professional Tournament Poker. Well I'm here to tell you that Volume 2 of the series is every bit as good as Volume 1. After reading Volume 1 of the series I made the bold prediction that Little's tournament books would supplant the Harrington on Hold'em series as the go-to source for tournament poker, and I have to say that after reading Volume 2 I feel this prediction is a foregone conclusion.
Overall
The second volume of SOPTP is one of the most unique and interesting poker books on the market. He covers how you should play and change your game at different stages of a tournament, from early play all the way to heads-up. But the material he covers in the rest of the book is in many ways the gold mine for readers, as the subject matter covered is pretty much not found in poker literature.
Overall
If you’ve read Volumes 1 and 2 of this series than Volume 3 is a must read, and even if you haven’t read Volumes 1 and 2 the final installment is simply a great value considering it’s a book with 150 hand histories from a top tournament player complete with commentary on the good and the bad decisions.

FIVE CONCEPTS YOU MUST MASTER TO WIN AT POKER TOURNAMENTS

I taught a live 2-hour online class called, "Five Concepts You MUST Master to Win at Poker Tournaments."

This was an advanced coaching class.

Here are the 5 concepts covered during this LIVE 2-hour training:

Relative Stack Size
I went over the concept of relative stack size. I showed how to play pocket aces with 100 BBs, 50 BBs, 25 BBs, and 12 BBs.

Pot Control
I discussed the concept of pot control, when to use it, when NOT to use it, and why. I also showed example hands.

Maximizing Fold Equity When Short
I discussed how to maximize fold equity when relatively short. I also discussed when you should shove over an initial raise. I discussed when you should shove when you have 10 big blinds from late position. Finally, I discussed what hands you should open push from early position when you have around 7 big blinds.

Staying Out of Trouble
I discussed when you should try to stay out of trouble, and when you need try to accumulate chips. I showed a hand where I have top pair, and another hand where I have a strong pre-flop hand.

Variance
I discussed variance from my own perspective. I showed the sharkscope graphs of various pros (as well as my own) and talked about their break even periods and downswings.
